Somehow at the holidays it is hard to write about anything other than my grandmother and her baking. Invariably, after one of her big holiday meals, we would always find my grandmother's Lemon Bisque sitting on the table amidst a buffet of desserts that the Clark/Tanners had brought to share. I always gravitated towards Grammy's Lemon Bisque. Something like a mix of half flan and half lemon pie, there was always room for it, even when I had eaten too much dinner.
Much like the desserts on my Grammy's holiday table, we offer a variety of programs at our schools. Recently, the Kindergarten teachers shared their feelings with me, via a survey, about what is working and not working with each of the Smorgasboard of programs offered to our students. Most teachers also offered helpful suggestions on how we could work to improve how we implement our curriculum. I was/am eager for their feedback because often, simple changes can make a tremendous difference. Grammy sometimes gave my brother, Lance, little suggestions on how to perfect his apple pie recipe ~ just a little bit more sugar or secret dash of salt that made a huge difference.
When we all work together, like a big family, we can make our schools the best. As equal partners in our learning community, I am eager for your feedback on each facet of our Kindergarten and Preschool programming. This week, I will be asking for your thoughts, via a survey, and then in person at the next Parent Coffee. In this way, we can build on all of our programming, incorporating thoughtful feedback, as we journey into the future together. Specifically, we are hoping for feedback on our: Kindergarten Phonics/Fundations program, our Kindergarten Second Step Social Skills Curriculum, our Kindergarten Engage NY Math program, our Kindergarten Portland Writing Program, Kindergarten Reader's Workshop, Kindergarten Core Knowledge Program for Listening & Speaking or the way that our preschool educators work together to implement their own curriculum by utilizing the 9 Rhode Island Early Learning & Development Standards.
As most of the teachers and some of the Mom's in our school know, I am absolutely not a baker. Many moons ago, I remember trying to make my grandmother's Lemon Bisque to impress someone at the time. I just couldn't do it and almost threw all of the ingredients away with the intention of heading to the local bakery instead. Luckily, I had a change of heart and I headed to Grammy's. I remember the bells on her front door clanging as I barged in and dumped all of the ingredients on her kitchen table in exasperation. She put down her cup of tea and step by step, she guided me through the process as we created it together. Thank you in advance parents, guardians and our early learning community for your feedback and warm wisdom as we work together to nurture and improve our programs for our little ones. Just like Grammy's Lemon Bisque, I believe that some of the best things in life can be created when we work together, with intention, using the ingredients that we already have.

GRAMMY’ S LEMON BISQUE RECIPE
1 can evaporated milk
1 package lemon gelatin
1 ¼ boiling water
2 ½ cups Social Tea Cookies Crumbs
1/3 cup honey
1/8 tsp salt
3 tbl lemon juice
1 grated lemon rind
Thoroughly chill milk. (Almost Freeze)
Dissolve gelatin in boiling water.
Add honey, salt, lemon juice and rind.
Put in refrigerator until partly congealed.
Beat milk until stiff (like heavy cream.)
Whip in jello mixture.
Spread ½ crumbs in bottom of the pan, pour in mixture, Cover with remaining crumbs.
Chill until set.
